Loto-Québec > Social Responsibility > Sustainable Development
In 2005, Loto-Québec launched a sustainable development initiative that includes the organization's economic, social and environmental spheres. In so doing, the Corporation reinforced the numerous practices it already had in place and integrated various new initiatives in order to tangibly and proactively meet the expectations of the various parties concerned.
In accordance with Québec's Sustainable Development Strategy and in solidarity with the entire civil service, Loto-Québec launched its sustainable development initiative, the Plan d'action de développement durable 2008-2013, in March 2009. This action plan, which is proof of Loto-Québec's commitment to sustainable development, will serve as a constructive guide to rally people to action. Through this open approach, we are joining forces with other key players in Québec society to foster sustainable development throughout the province. We believe that this document is an ideal way to take bold new steps and inform the public about our commitments, particularly those affecting compulsive gambling.
With the launch of its Plan d'action de développement durable 2008-2013, Loto-Québec has shown its commitment to implementing new responsible practices. Steps have already been taken to ensure the realization of these goals, as attested to by the Sustainable Development Status Report [PDF Format, 180 KB, Help] in the last annual report.
In 2008-2009, our key initiatives focused on managing our buildings, practicing responsible procurement, obtaining responsible gaming certification from the World Lottery Association and making our employees aware of sustainable development.
In terms of managing our premises, our environmental initiatives have garnered us a number of awards.
In the context of BOMA BESt certification, the various programs and measures to reduce water and energy consumption undertaken since 2006 have met with encouraging results.
Committed to the implementation of the Politique pour un gouvernement écoresponsable, the Corporation has continued in its efforts to practice responsible procurement, notably through the training of procurement agents and the integration of environmental criteria in most calls for bids.
Obtaining the highest level of the World Lottery Association's International Responsible Gaming Certification attests to the importance placed on the quality of the Corporation's aid and awareness programs for employees and clientele. It is worth noting that today, 84% of our employees have been made aware of responsible gaming through these interventions.
As for raising awareness of sustainable development, many campaigns and theme-based events have enabled our employees to increase their knowledge of the principles of sustainable development and to apply them in their daily activities. As part of the awareness campaign to reduce paper consumption, a video created for the Journée de l'environnement dans l'administration publique was shown to the employees of Québec government departments and organizations to encourage the adoption of more responsible practices.

A committee in charge of social responsibility and sustainable development keeps the initiative on track and closely monitors its progress. The committee is made up of some 20 employees from our headquarters and subsidiaries. Loto-Québec is also home to 15 or so committees whose mandate is to propose further sustainable development initiatives.
Since our Sustainable Development Policy (in French only) [PDF Format, 288 KB - Help, last update on June 12, 2007] was adopted in 2006, the Board of Directors has been kept abreast of all progress made throughout the organization.
As part of our strategic planning, each department in the company integrates sustainable development initiatives annually into its operational strategy through targets, indicators and timelines, all of which is monitored through an annual evaluation. Over the course of the most recent review, the targets were met 82% of the time, a tremendous achievement.
